I am trying to research an LSM that was later bought by the Virginia Ferry System for use as a tanker for the Kiptopeke to Little Creek Ferry run. It was bought in 1948. Do you know which LSM this would have been?

No Ron I don't know, but I am forwarding your message on to Paul Burket who has had some success in tracing these ships.

Ron,
I do not remember seeing any LSM's that were sold to the Virginia Ferry System. Most were sold to other companies and they sold them again to different companies for conversions. I suggest contacting the Virginia Ferry System and ask them, if they are still in business. It may be hard to find any books that go back that far or employees that are old enough or still alive that would remember that far back. I will put out some feelers and see what developes.

I found it. I went through over 400 of the listed LSMs before I found
it. The number is LSM-73. She was converted to serve as a tanker and
renamed the M/V Kiptopeke in 1948. I have seen one photo of her as a
tanker. Black hull and White topsides. I'll try to get you a photo of it.

LSM 73 - Kiptopeke
Hi Paul,
I was able to locate a photo of the LSM 73 as the M/V Kiptopeke (Photo from the Scanlan Collection). She had a superstructure added just aft of midship and tanks fitted inside the hull.Hull was black and upper works were white with "straw" colored stack. Official hull number was 256435.
Her new deminsions after conversion were:
1029 Gross Tons
646 Net Tons
3600 HP
195.2 ft X 34.1 Ft X 17.8 Ft
She was purchased by the Chesapeake Bay Ferry District of Cape Charles, VA in 1948. Later the Virginia Ferry Commission took over the ferry line. She served as a tanker to service the seven car ferries that ran between Kiptopeke and Little Creek, VA.
