Howdy...............from da' Mountains of Western NC,

I really enjoyed your website. My dad, Lyonell A. 'Bill' Wyatt was the firecontrolman for the twin-40 mount on LSM466. His duty stations sounded very much like where you went on LSM462. Anchored off Saipan's harbor, 466's smoke generator also caught on fire, and he ended up in that gun director above the superstructure like a 'sitting duck', 'til they got it shut down. This happened a lot. Somewhat un-nerving!

He had to re-wire the Mark (?) Gun Director---cuz during target practice(before going thru the Panama Canal) the cables broke the first time the turret came around, since there was not enough slack. The Old Man was eating out of Dad's hand later, after he got the sucker working again by bartering some wiring in New Orleans on the way down South. They had to pick up a load of dry-dock steel at one port on the East Coast where they stopped.

Dad printed a Newspaper about events onboard the '466' and the group that they sailed with. Did you ever see a copy of it while you were at sea? We are trying to locate some copies now. I remember reading some that Dad brought back home in Charlotte, NC.

He wrapped a monkey-fist around his bos'n mate's neck one day trying to tie up at a dock. He had not had any practice at that skill yet, but the bos'n mate would not take 'no' for an answer. Dad got to practice a lot later on the fantail (out of range).

Let me hear from you...........
