Tugboat Whistle
"A WW II Post War Mystery"

Is This TugBoat an Old LSM?

This Question was Asked and Oklahoma SandScraper, Paul Burket, took up the Challenge. It appears that he has found the answer. Here He is.... at his best......Take it Paul

I am glad I found the Little River Books web site. It is all about river boats, barges, tugs, etc. I enjoyed looking at the photos.

The LSM was probably scrapped by the 60's. The gentleman, I talked too, started to work in 1964 and he said, "all the old timers had retired and most of them had died." I thought, I recognized the bridge as being in Louisville and he confirmed it. My Daughter lived outside Louisville for 5 years or so in the 90's.

I started at LSM 1 and at LSM 38 there it was. Jefferson Boat & Machine Co, Jeffersonville, IN. The Jefferson Boat & Machine Co. is now called, the Jeffboat, Inc. They built and converted ships/boats into Tug boats for the Commercial Barge Line. The Date is about right too. 1948- 49 with a new paint job fits the slot.

What do you all think?

Just found the LSM 74 was also sold to the Jefferson Boat and Machine Co in 1947 too. Guess it could be either LSM 38 or LSM 74.

Yesterday's Heroes

Dear Paul,

Leave a doubt----of which one of these brave ships was reduced to this inglorious end.

Soul and Heart removed and sentenced to parade up and down, dressed in gaudy colors, sounding horn and bell.

Truly a clown’s end to a proud and glorious past. Would any hero choose this type of fare-well?
