The USS Amphibian - WW II

The Lone Ship
Why the Mystery?

All I know is that they are from some town on Lake Erie. They don't want to make it known until every thing is in place for the move.

Jim T

Well, it could be that they are moving it somewhere over the rainbow.. where blue birds fly... ..

The real question is ... What are they going to do with it?

1950 - USAF
I was stationed at Hamilton AFB, San Rafael, California and assigned to the AACS I&M Detachment "A".

The Korean War had just started and the President, Harry S. Truman, decided that it was in the best interest of the United States that .... He extended My Air Force service to one more year. Bless his little Heart.

"OKIES"
In 1950 the feelings about OKIES in in California were written on the Walls of Rest Rooms......"Go Home You Damn Okies" and other more profaned written statements......

My Buddy set me up with a blind date. His girl friend assured him that she was pretty and she and I had a lot in common. Now you can't beat a comment like that.....So away I go with my buddy looking forward to a wonderful evening on the Town.

Sure enough she was pretty and had a nice smile. We went to a club and sit down at a table ....... I ask her where she was from and she said she was born in Oklahoma. Well my mind just went wild with great Expectations and I said, (and I will never forget) "I am an OKIE too........"

She did not say another word, she got up and looked as if she was going to Cry, and ran out of the club. She did not return. My Buddy and his Girl Friend were as stunned as I was........

I left the Club and did not pursue the real reason for her departure. I found me a new Buddy.

The Turns and Time Goes By - 2007

Now as an old man ... and having some thoughts about my mouth and my foolish youth....... I realized that I hurt that girl. I did not mean too, but I now know in my old heart, that I did.

There is no doubt that she had suffered very much and probably had as a young girl traveled with her family down route 66. See the photos below .. they speak for themselves.

What I should have said, "I am from Oklahoma too."
