Memories Of NLSMA Reunion - 2005
Tusing, (no hat) editor of the NLSMA magazine 'Alligator Alley', Burns and wife, East Coast regional director, Kupe and yours truly. I had grabbed Kupe's hand to keep him from waving directions at Helen on how to take the picture [and OFF of Jean!]'Kupe' is an 84 year old WWII Amphibious Forces Pacific theater LSM 285 veteran. He works as an engraver for a jewelry store in Houston, Texas. When I was researching my Navy records in 2004. the Nat'l LSM~LSMR Assoc gave me Kupeline's address in Houston as someone who would help me (altruistic, without charge). That was back in spring of 2004. Then when I found out that the Annual National LSM Association was having their reunion in San Antonio, in August 2005, Helen and I made a special trip to San Antonio just to meet with Kupe and a couple of the Association's officers. Through Kupe's guidance, I have a filing cabinet full of Navy records applicable to my time of WWII service. We were together for about an hour and half in the OMNI Hotel hospitality room with a couple of other of the association's officers and wives meeting with some of the NALSM Reunion ... it was a memorable visit. Helen and I had to get back to ranch to continue our ongoing 'coping with the drought' (which continued for another 12 months following this meeting.) Kupe, at this moment, is in M D Anderson hospital undergoing extensive medical tests to determine if the cancer of the bladder has metastasized. Some 'spots' have appeared on his liver in yesterday's CAT scans. He's in our prayers.

"Colonel Bogie's March"

I'm sailing away, set an open course for the virgin sea
I've got to be free free to face the life that's ahead of me
On board I'm the captain, so climb aboard
We'll search for tomorrow on every shore
And I'll try, oh Lord, I'll try to carry on
I look to the sea, reflections in the waves spark my memory
Some happy, some sad
I think of childhood friends and the dreams we had
We live happily forever so the story goes
But somehow we missed out on that pot of gold
But we'll try best that we can to carry on
A gathering of angels appeared above my head
They sang to me this song of hope and this is what they said
They said, come sail away, come sail away
Come sail away with me
Come sail away, come sail away
Come sail away with me
I thought that they were angels but to my surprise
They climbed aboard their starship and headed for the skies
Singing, come sail away, come sail away
Come sail away with me
Come sail away, come sail away
Come sail away with me
